Arty Smarty

Project Type: Brand digital platform

Industry: Culture, media, and editorial publishing

Outcomes: Publication-grade editorial presence, Solo-editor issue publishing, Mailchimp-native list growth, Dual-channel web & email distribution

The Problem

Arty Smarty is a New York–based cultural brand built around The Arty Smarty Memo — a curated editorial publication covering art, design, style, music, film, and the ideas shaping contemporary culture. The client needed more than a landing page. They needed a publication-grade digital home that could carry the same editorial confidence as the memo itself, host each issue as a permanent online edition, grow a subscriber base, and remain entirely manageable without leaning on developers for every launch.
The challenge sat at the intersection of brand, product, and operations. The site had to feel like it belonged beside serious culture publications — not a newsletter startup template. It had to support a repeatable issue workflow (PDF upload, cover treatment, edition labelling, archive browsing). It had to connect cleanly to Mailchimp for list growth. And it had to give a non-technical editor a calm, focused CMS experience — not the full complexity of a default WordPress install.
For a studio working with ambitious editorial clients across borders, the brief was familiar: translate a strong creative vision into a system that performs beautifully in public and stays practical behind the scenes.

How We Solved It

We treated Arty Smarty as a brand product exercise before writing code.
Direction began with two deliberate concept routes — Editorial Monument (dark, cinematic, collectible-cover energy) and Gallery Fashion (lighter fashion-editorial panel system) — benchmarked against publication-grade references including ArtReview, Colossal, Elephant, and Cultured. From that exploration, we aligned on a premium editorial system: asymmetry and hierarchy over template symmetry, typography as identity, tonal section rhythm instead of repeated navy-and-gold blocks, and negative space used with intention.
On the technical side, we designed a governed WordPress architecture rather than a page-builder assembly. Pages are composed through a curated ACF component library with starter presets, so layout quality stays consistent even as content changes. A dedicated newsletter publication post type handles the memo’s core product — each issue as a first-class digital edition with PDF reader, tracked downloads, and a public archive. A custom Arty Smarty Editor role strips away everything non-essential and surfaces only what the client needs: newsletters, site content, media, and the homepage.
We extended the engagement into Mailchimp operations — engineering a repeatable email template workflow that preserves the memo’s designed layout (Canva card exports, column-based Mailchimp structure, Playfair Display typography, and clickable card links) so web publishing and email distribution work as one coherent launch rhythm.

Key Decisions Made:

Publication-first art direction
The site was positioned as a cultural publication platform, not a marketing site with a blog attached. Component design, spacing rhythm, and tonal sequencing were governed by editorial rules, not generic theme defaults.
Component-governed page building
Ten curated ACF components (Hero Banner, Rich Text, Media With Copy, Quote Break, Feature Cards, Image Gallery, Stats Row, FAQ Accordion, CTA Band, Newsletter Signup) replace open-ended page builders. Starter presets accelerate new pages while protecting design integrity.
Newsletter as a product, not a post
A custom `newsletter` post type with structured fields (edition label, issue date, intro, PDF, cover image, byline) powers dedicated issue templates, an `/newsletter/` archive, embedded PDF reader on desktop, and mobile-first cover + download behaviour.
Built-in issue analytics
Page views and PDF download counts are tracked per issue via a custom REST endpoint, giving the client lightweight performance signals without a separate analytics product.
Mailchimp-native signup
The homepage subscribe form posts directly to the Mailchimp Marketing API with configurable merge-field mapping, honeypot spam protection, and graceful handling for existing subscribers — no third-party form plugin dependency.
Client-safe editorial governance
A dedicated **Site Content** panel separates everyday homepage updates (hero copy, memo card image, issue label) from admin-only Theme Settings (brand palette, API credentials, global header/footer). The custom editor role hides plugins, themes, users, and technical menus entirely.
Dual-channel launch system
Website issue publishing and Mailchimp campaign creation were designed as complementary workflows, with a reusable Mailchimp edition template so each new memo can ship on-site and in-inbox with matching visual fidelity.

What We Built

We delivered a custom WordPress theme and publishing engine tailored to how Arty Smarty actually produces and distributes culture coverage.
Frontend
A publication-grade homepage with a composed hero: oversized display typography on one side, a collectible memo card object on the other, and a glass-panel subscribe module wired to Mailchimp. Header navigation includes a dedicated **Issues** link to the memo archive. Footer carries brand-owned social slots, copyright, and studio credit — deliberately removed from default WordPress visual language.
Issue pages use a minimal publication header and a reader experience built around the uploaded PDF: inline embed on desktop, cover image with download CTA on mobile. The issues archive presents each edition as a browsable editorial catalogue with cover thumbnails and dates.
The component system supports future editorial expansion — about pages, campaign landing sections, and long-form editorial entries — without breaking the visual system established on the homepage.
Backend
A streamlined CMS for the client editor role: a branded dashboard with quick actions, a Newsletters menu for issue management, Site Content for homepage hero and memo card updates, and a trimmed Media Library workflow. Issue list tables surface edition labels, view counts, and download counts at a glance.
Theme Settings (admin-only) centralise logo, colour tokens, header behaviour, signup form field configuration, Mailchimp credentials, and social links — keeping technical configuration out of the client’s daily path.
Integrations & Operations
– Mailchimp Marketing API subscription endpoint with merge-tag support
– Tracked PDF download routing via custom REST API
– Mailchimp email template architecture for repeatable campaign production
– Editor handover documentation for issue launches and homepage updates
In short: a full editorial platform — from first impression to issue archive to list growth — built for a New York culture brand and operated by a non-technical publisher.

Outcomes

Publication-grade presence The live site reads as a culture platform with editorial intent, not a generic WordPress theme with content dropped in.
Repeatable issue workflow New memo editions can be published by uploading a PDF, setting an edition label, and updating the homepage memo card — no developer required per issue.
Permanent issue archive Each edition lives at a dedicated URL with reader, download, and archive listing — building a growing cultural back catalogue.
List growth infrastructure Homepage signups flow directly into Mailchimp with a form experience that matches the site's premium visual language.
Operational clarity The custom editor role and Site Content panel reduce CMS noise to four meaningful destinations: newsletters, site content, landing page, and media.
Dual-channel distribution Web publishing and Mailchimp email campaigns share a coherent launch workflow, preserving layout fidelity across channels.
Lightweight performance insight Per-issue view and download metrics give the client signal on readership without additional tooling.
