Ang’awa & Company Advocates
The Problem
Ang’awa & Company Advocates—a Kenyan law firm focused on public interest litigation, constitutional law, and legal aid—needed a website that could do two things at once: reflect their seriousness and expertise, and make it easy for their team to keep the site up to date without relying on developers for every change.
Their existing presence didn’t match the firm’s positioning or the sophistication of their work. They needed a clear narrative (from “who we are” to “why choose us” and “what we do”), a professional, editorial look that would stand out in the legal space, and a content model that would scale as they added practice areas, team, and outcomes—without turning the site into a technical project every time they wanted to update copy or images.
How We Solved It
We treated the project as a brand and product exercise first: we aligned on messaging and structure (hero, about, value proposition, practice areas, founder story, differentiators, gallery, contact), then designed and built a custom WordPress theme that turns that structure into manageable building blocks.
We avoided generic page builders in favour of a tailored block system powered by ACF Pro. Every section on the homepage is a dedicated block—hero, stats, value props, practice areas, founder profile, “why choose us,” gallery—so the client gets a consistent layout and clear content roles (headlines, taglines, CTAs, images) without touching code. The design uses a restrained palette and typography (including a gold accent and Space Grotesk/Inter) so the site feels editorial and credible, not “template-y.”
Key Decisions Made:
- Block-based, editor-friendly architecture
- Seven custom ACF blocks give full control over hero, stats, value proposition, practice areas, founder profile, differentiators, and gallery. Content teams can reorder sections and edit copy and images in the block editor without breaking the design.
- Editorial design system
- Clear section labels and taglines, a consistent 8px spacing system, and a defined colour/type system keep the site coherent and easy to read, while subtle patterns and overlays add depth without clutter.
- Founder story and social proof as first-class sections
- A dedicated founder block with a scrollable bio and optional modal, plus a “Why choose us” block with stat/icon differentiators, put expertise and credibility front and centre in a structured way.
- Gallery and lightbox as part of the theme
- A horizontal, scrollable firm gallery with a “view all” lightbox keeps the homepage compact while still showcasing the team and work; all managed via the same block and media library.
- Mobile-first, no extra bloat
- Responsive layout, touch-friendly gallery and modals, and vanilla JS (no heavy frameworks) keep the site fast and usable on all devices while staying maintainable.
What We Built
We delivered a custom WordPress theme tailored to Ang’awa & Company Advocates: a one-off design and codebase that matches their brand and content strategy, not a generic theme with content slotted in.
The homepage is built from seven block types: a full-width hero with overlay and CTAs; an “About us” stat hero with a prominent pro bono stat; a numbered value-proposition section; a practice-areas block with a featured area and grid; a founder profile with image, scrollable bio, and optional full-profile modal; a “Why choose us” section with differentiator cards (stats or icon labels plus title and description); and a firm gallery with horizontal scroll and lightbox. Navigation, footer, and contact details are driven by a simple theme options panel (logo, addresses, contact info) so global changes don’t require editing every page.
The front end is semantic HTML, CSS variables for theming, and minimal JavaScript for smooth scrolling, mobile menu, modals, and lightbox. The theme is documented, version-controlled, and ready for the client to own and extend—with no dependency on a third-party page builder.
